Exhale...The After Effects of Deep Breath

*Slight Spoilers For Deep Breath*

This is not a review of the episode Deep Breath per se, but a comprehensive look at series 8 and the new Doctor.

The picture above is the Doctor's final confrontation with the enemy in Deep Breath. He is calm, cool, and incharge. He is the smartest man in the room and he will let you know it. This is the formula that past Doctors have used. Being able to outsmart the opponent, while offering them a drink, or Jelly Baby.
I have known for a while that I would enjoy Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. How you might ask, other than the fact that I have been a Whovian for most of my life. He is a fan, straight and simple. His portrayal of the 12th Doctor has shown his complete understanding of the character. Not to take away from David Tennant who also was a fan before carrying the mantle, he was much younger and the show had only been on for a year before he stepped in to his suit, and converse.
Peter's Doctor isn't going to be the boyfriend you bring home at Christmas, he will be the grumpy professor that calls you names, but by the end of class astounds you at the knowledge and insight he has. The kind that you respect, and when it is all said and done you go to with questions, and advice.

*SPOILERS & SPECULATION FROM HERE ON*

Deep Breath left the viewers with a few questions. Steven Moffat likes to give the audience something to ponder.

Who put the ad in the paper? Who is the lady in the shop that gave Clara the phone number to the TARDIS in the first place? Who is Missy (pictured below) who calls herself the Doctor's girlfriend? Are they all one and the same?

Doctor Who TV has a great post on these questions and more.

My theory is she is the Rani. An evil renegade Time Lord much like the Master. How else would she be able to give Clara the phone number in the future, except that she has her own TARDIS to do so. Also I have a feeling that the last scene she has with the clockwork droid is inside of her TARDIS. It is round like most traditional control rooms, and even has a column coming out of the center of the fountain.

It seems we are in store for a new, yet old story arc. I am sure with Capaldi in role it will be a great time.
Here are some funny bits from Deep Breath enjoy.

Now for my favorite line in the show.

Did you watch Deep Breath yet?
If so, what did you think?
Do you have any theories on where the series is going?

  1. The grumpy professor you admire - at least he's taking the role as his own. So you think she's a Time Lord with her own Tardis? How many Tardises are floating around the galaxy, anyway?

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. And I can't say that about the first Tennant episode or the first Matt Smith episode. They seriously annoyed me in their first episodes, although I came to love them later. So I found it promising that I enjoyed Capaldi right away!

  3. I admire the grumpy professor as well, but I may be a tad biased. Rani... ah.... that means queen... The plot thickens.

  4. glad to see so much excitement over at the court of Walstonia :)

  5. Possibly only 3, the Doctor, Master, and the Rani.

  6. Just my speculation, but if you don't come out with something you can never say you thought of it in the first place.

  7. That about sums it up for me also. Tennant was a no show, and Smith was almost too quirky till the end when he faced the Atraxi. Capaldi had me at Shush!

  8. Thanks, that means alot coming from you.
I have no clue who she is, but I felt a Rani type vibe she was putting out.

  9. Yes we do like our Doctor Who here!
My son was outside playing, and told me that I had to go get him when it came on.
He would have been mad had I watched it without him.

  10. Seems like I'm in the minority, but I'm not sure I liked Mr C. I'll give him another chance, though.

  11. 'Sorry, trick of the light.' I laughed out loud :)

  12. You got most of the funniest parts of this episode and it's really interesting stuff. (review on Friday of course). Another great link post m'man.

  13. Thanks!
After watching it the second time I got so many more lines than the first viewing.
It makes me wonder if it is his Scottish that makes it funnier.

  14. Blarg! I'm not reading. I'm going to watch it this week. Pretty excited.

  15. Thanks for stopping by! Hope you like it when you see it!

  16. I agree. It was a really good episode - hit all the right notes that it needed to with some memorable scenes and good dialogue.

Plus, as you point out, Capaldi appears to have gotten into his character and nailed it more quickly than the last couple Doctors have.

    I'm hopeful!

  17. Love your post. I'm a big bow-tie doctor fan (that's what my son has named Matt's doctor), so I was a little hesitant about Capaldi. Capaldi will be okay....not MY Doctor, but okay all the same. I was dissappointed in the story line. I've felt that since the beginning of season 7 the writing has gotten really weak. Hoping that this new season will pick up and the "Deep Breath" was only slow because of Capaldi's introduction. I cried when Matt Smith showed up at the end (I've been careful to avoid spoilers and didn't know that was coming)...I really miss him! Btw...my son, immediately after it ended, said, "I hated it". A bit harsh, but he is 11 :)

  18. Thanks. I thought series 7 the endings were rushed in a lot of episodes.
My son is 12 and has Autism. That being said he realy doesn't do well with change. I have a collection of old Doctor Who episodes, manly the 4th go figure, anyway we watched some of those along with what BBC America had put out for the 50th on every Doctor. He was prepared for the change, but still liked Matt Smith.

  19. It must be a big thrill to be a fan and get to play Dr Who. It hardly surprising Deep breath has made quite a splash.

  20. I've read that he actually thought he was too old to play the Doctor. Then they up and offered him the part. That would have been spectacular to be a fly on the wall to see the reaction he had when that happened.

  21. I can't wait to see what is in store for the rest of the series.

  22. I wouldn't trust a gal named Missy, especially not one who looks so devious.
Your build-up is really fun. I'm tempted to become a Dr. Who fan.

  23. I enjoyed the episode (It aired at 4:10am in Oz, the same time it aired in the UK, and again at a more decent hour at 7.30pm). I wasn't that fussed for the slapstick humour. Hopefully they will keep that at a minimum, or better yet, remove it altogether. I do like the darker Dr. I'm reserving judgement on Missy. At the moment I'm not too fussed for her either. She reminds me too much of River. I'm definitely looking forward to more episodes.

  24. Moffat has a certain way of writing women, sometimes they are all River Song!
I don't mind some slapstick, I do like the darker tone and how he has the air of superiority, but still cares for everyone.

  25. It might be just him, but I notice Monty Python used Scottish accents to good effect!

  26. I haven't see it yet! Ugh. I hate having to watch on my computer, so I often wait far longer than I want to get caught up. Can't wait though!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Can you believe, I haven't yet had time to watch the first episode of the season? Ugh! I did see a special about finding the perfect Doctor. I'm sure Capaldi will be an awesome Doctor!

  28. Luckily I have BBC America, so I am able to DVR and watch it as much as I want.

  29. So far, so good! Capaldi is bringing back the Old Doctor Swagger!

  30. I got to watch it from the TARDIS, long story... I am digging the man, he [like you said] old doctor swagger...
