Commitment...A IWSG Post

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

The Insecure Writer’s Support Group t-shirt is available now! Designed by the very talented Jeremy Hawkins, members can now show their support and commitment to the group.

Purchase your IWSG shirt at the NeatOShop.

While you're there pick up some other cool shirts!

The last few months have been quite busy for me. I only seem to post on ISWG wednesday to remind myself that I actually do write from time to time. Lately the only writing I have done is at work for the Man...
I have come to the conclusion that this writing thing takes Commitment...

I just read a great post by my friend Roland :

One golden nugget I received from his post is to commit to writing just a little a day. It doesn't seem that hard, in fact I just started! If you need a good excuse not to start, this list is for you...

  3. Just getting started has been a struggle lately.

  4. I know you have used some of them before. ;-)

  6. Just the other day, I was thinking about how I hadn't seen you around for a while.

I'm always torn between writing something just for the sake of writing something and waiting until I have something I need to say.

Fortunately, I don't generally go very long without writing, so I never have to make the choice. Mostly.

  7. I love to read your dialogue with others on Disqus.
You are so cordial with so many jerks. ;-)

  8. Unfortunately they don't make books that write themselves yet.

  9. When they do I hope it isn't in binary code...

  10. Whenever you think of your WIP, write a least on sentence in it. If you do that, you may end up writing more. :)

  11. Some of the problems are the things that enterupt as I write. Kids, wife, dogs, cats, neighbors, mother-in-law, bathroom....not always in that order....
By the time I get back I forget what it was I started on.

  12. I love the Excuse Generator! But don't let my teenagers find it ...

When my life was at its busiest, I found that one night of designated writing time per week could get me through. My family knew about that one night and adapted their schedules around it. They RESPECTED its sanctity.

My schedule has opened up since then, but I still host that designated writing time on Monday evenings. We sign in. We write. We chat afterwards about how much we got done. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send you details!

  13. Hahaha that Excuse Generator is brilliant :)

I'm finding that I have too MUCH time and it's hard to get myself to buckle down like I used to be able to. Guess it works both ways..

    Happy IWSG Day!

  14. That sounds nice. Not that long ago, when I came home from work, I would take a shower then have about 30 min to myself to write. I miss that time, but life changes and I must learn to evolve.

  15. Time has a way of taking up Time!

  16. Life is always changing. Kids grow and need you in different ways. Jobs change, transform, grow evil ... (Sorry, getting my dig into the teaching profession since I learned the school I Ieft eliminated a beloved civics/economic units now that I'm no longer there to champion it.)

If you can find one time per week and convince your family to buy into YOUR WRITING TIME, you can do it. Surely they can spare you an hour a week --and when you have all that creativity building toward that time, you'll be surprised how much you get accomplished.

  19. Great post Jeremy and you always find the best images. Sorry this comment is late but that the director of 101 Dalmatians slept with my uncle...

  20. That list is hilarious! Especially the Dallas Cowboys offensive line. (The whole team is offensive.) Sometimes you have to grab what little time you have.

  21. We had several people leave at work. My responsibilities have grown, but not my time of paycheck...

  29. I love the excuse creator! I lost track of time because Kevin Spacey crapped in my gas tank.

  31. Great excuse list here David, fraid - robbers broke into my house and stole my laptop, lol, so I'm playing catch up but hey. We're all in this together!
