Confessions of a insecure Writer...

I have a confession to make...
I am an atrocious speller,
and my use of grammar stinks!

This is the response I always feel is appropriate to most of my writing. I have always struggled placing my thoughts down in words. I have no problem communicating audibly, but once it is typed out I struggle with my spelling. Thank God for Spell check, but it can't catch everything. I also thank God I married above myself. My wife helps me on important documents. She tutored English when she was in college. I always ask who is smarter the smart one, or the one who married the smart one.

Do you struggle with your English?

  1. Married up - funny!
I'm a good speller, but there are other areas in which I struggle. I guess if we're smart, we surround ourselves with people who can help us with those problems.
Now I want to go watch The Princess Bride...

  2. I make sure to let her know that.
The Princess Bride is a classic.

  3. When I'm tired I can really struggle with the spelling.

  4. Sometimes I'm embarrassed for myself when I misspell. Or fail to edit properly. But most of the time I'm pretty good with that. This does not mean everyone has to meet my lofty standards. Your sins are forgiven, Mr. Walston.

  5. I'm terrible at grammar and there are certain words I spell wrong every time I type them. Thank goodness for a great CP or I'd be in a world of hurt. I feel sorry for him but he insists he doesn't mind. Poor guy.

  7. Me grammar is the worst David. I can get away with it usually. But every time one of our posts go viral an army of proofreaders tears it to shreds. It's pretty embarrassing honestly. Great IWSG post Man. Ironically I wrote a whole post about my use of the word Emperor. http://bit.ly/IErshS

  8. My dad was a horrible speller. He was a patent holding chemist, but you'd often hear him yell to my mom..."How do you spell was? Really, that just looks wrong."

And I suppose it foes look wrong. Maybe you guys are just too focused on logic.

  11. Thanks!
I tell my wife the same thing about certain words. They do look wrong therefore they are!

  12. Hi David, nice to meet you. Glad to hear someone else has some of the same problems. While I can spell fairly well and spell check takes care of the rest, I freely admit that I don't know where the commas go. I like to sprinkle them in and around for affect or should that be effect. See? What did I tell you?

  13. I think, I have, that problem, also! :)

  14. Spell check is my best friend. Seriously would die without it. And I have an awesome Grammar Queen for a critique partner who ensures I keep my commas in line!

  15. OH so that is the positive spin I can give my wife "Grammar Queen" instead of the negative "Grammar Nazi".
This might stop some of the unnecessary arguments in the household. Thanks.

  16. Haha! Yeah, it may help out :)

  17. Yes, I struggle with English. A lot. Mostly it's because I can't be bothered to bother with 'mere words.' I'm a big picture guy.

I'm horrific with vocabulary. Thesaurus and spell-check are a Godsend! How did writers cope without a computer many moons ago? They were definitely awesome people.

  19. There are so many different ways to communicate.

  20. That is for sure!
They were so much better than I.

  21. Actually, I'm usually pretty good with spelling. I'm still grateful for spell-check, because I've been known to mess up from time to time!

  22. I would be a candidate for "Hooked on Phonics"!
I shared your Mama Diaries with my wife tonight, I think you have a new follower!

  23. well, I hate to say it but I get the irks when someone misspells a word...okay, unless I DON'T know how to either!

  24. I think I get lazy in my typing sometimes.
Other times I'm just plane ignorant of the spelling.

  25. Maybe you should discreetly record yourself when you are verbalising. Then write it down and watch the grammar anarchy cause all sorts of mayhem. I'm fairly okay with English, English as in proper English. Of course, I could make my spell check go into a frenzy by doing this, "neighborhood" "color" "honor" "endeavor"....sorry, spell check, I shall stop now.

    Take care, David.

    Gary :)

  26. I need one of the programs that type as I talk...then I could see the fun!
I still don't understand the "English" spelling and the "American English" spelling.

  27. We're related. I can't spell either. In fact, I would have to look atrocious up. I also have a big problem leaving comments on these blogspot sites since they went and changed the posting section.

  28. I did look up "atrocious"!
I want to be able to express myself in every way possible.
I like to use the Disqus format, because I am able to edit what I might get wrong.

  29. I do stumble at times and am thankful for all the great resources out there. It seems the more I learn in the grammar department, the more there is to learn!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Is it learning if you forget it latter?
That seems to be my case sometimes.

  31. Sometimes I type too fast, but other than that I have no excuse.
