Have you ever come up with an idea and thought what a wonderfully awesome idea! Only to run it by your compadres, and get the wind knocked out of your sails? Do you have any comrades? Lets take a look at what it takes to be secure in yourself!

It's always a good thing to value the thoughts and ideas of others, but when it comes down to the "Nitty Gritty" it is important to follow who you are.
Soon after my wife and I were married we were discussing her finishing nursing school. She started at a University in East Texas, but now that we were married we lived near Houston. She could finish up at the local community college, or return to East Texas and finish in the same amount of time with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing not just her RN. Texas is big it was 4 hours away from the support of family. We would be on our own. We talked it over with both her family and mine. Neither side thought it was a good idea. We told everyone that we appreciated their counsel, but we would be making the trek to East Texas. Both sides said it wouldn't last, and we would fall on our face's. We made them eat crow at her graduation party!
Not every decision you make will bring glad tidings. You have to have some form of being secure in yourself to allow you to make your decisions in the first place.
Follow yourself and you'll never be lost...
You might go in circles from time to time, but at least you'll manage to be yourself!

Input from others is good, but ultimately, we are the ones who have to live with our decisions. So we better be happy with the ones we make.
They said it wouldn't last, but you proved them wrong. Way to go David!
ReplyDeleteTrue as true is, David. You can always solicit advice, but you will never know what inspiration is if you pass everything by a committee.

ReplyDeleteWe moved with me not having a job, limited savings and her in nursing school. So yes the odds were against us, but we did what we knew was right.

We have lessened the amount that we rely on family for advice.
ReplyDeleteI never reveal my story ideas to anyone until it is written and getting published. lol The only opinion that matters is your own. If you love the idea than others will too, even if your comrades don't. :)

ReplyDeleteIt sounds absurd to them until someone other than you confirms that it can be interpreted otherwise. Because people are always waiting to be convinced. That's the real trick.

ReplyDeleteI spent the previous 6 years living in San Antonio, and you ain't lying! Texas is HUGE. LOL
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I made a similar decision when it came to her education. We moved to far northern Missouri (via Oklahoma, where we'd spent our entire lives to that point) after she finished undergrad.
We'd just finished up our first year of marriage, and family (hers and mine) weren't keen on the idea. It was scary, not having family close for the first time for either of us, but it ended up being the best decision we've made as a couple. It forced us to build our support system only around each other, which has served us well in all of our travels since that time. (She's in the military, so we hop around some.)
At some point, you're going to have to travel your own road in this life. So you might as well start exploring the map when given the chance. :)
Thanks for sharing! We moved from East Texas to San Antonio after she graduated. Again 4 hours away from family, they still aren't happy,. When you receive 3 job offers from S.A. and none from Houston you kinda think that it might be where you need to go.

ReplyDeleteExcellent post! I was once nabbed by the marketing people in the mall who asked me if I thought putting yogurt in a tube was a good idea and would it be marketable to kids; I said absolutely not. Ridiculous. Wow, was I wrong. I buy Go-Gurt every week. (Congrats to your wife!)

ReplyDeleteI once worked in a mall for a Chiropractor. It was always fun going up to people and getting their reaction to the spiel that I had rehearsed to get them to come in and make an appointment.
Sharing an idea with others too early can absolutely kill it for me. I'm careful not to even share a piece with my wife before I'm confident I can withstand judgment.

Even if the odds seem to be potentially against you. Your good lady and your self, united in a common cause. I have had plenty of my ideas dismissed. My family hardly knows about my blog. Still, despite them not showing much interest, that is actually a catalyst that keeps me going. I look at the choices I have made as a challenging adventure.
